WORKSHOP (ENCORE): The 10th tradition: How did my experience become an outside issue?

A talk by Shayla Martin Journalist, Speaker, Podcast Producer

In this replay of her talk at the Sober Voices Summit in February of 2021, Shayla will share the history of the 10th tradition of Alcoholics Anonymous, which states that "Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.A. name ought never be drawn into public controversy.” and how it has been possibly misinterpreted within 12-step fellowship spaces. She will attempt to define what an “outside issue” is, share her experience of feeling othered by this tradition as a person of color, offer additional resources of recovery where these issues are welcomed, and invite people of color to take up space within 12-step recovery rooms.
